Integrated pest management is a safer and more environmentally sound alternative to chemical-dependent methods of controlling pests. Among the control strategies are the following: prevention, application of the least hazardous pesticides, precision targeting of a treated area (away from people), and reduction of pest access points.
Children are highly susceptible to the dangers caused by exposure to the toxic chemicals typically used in pest management. Clearly, then, one of the most important places to apply IPM strategies is in schools where children spend a large part of the day.
