Alternative Energy Sources

Many of the commonly used sources of energy - oil, natural gas, coal, wood - are being depleted as a result of heavy use by industrialized nations, increasing industrialization in other countries, and population growth. Obtaining these products damages areas of the earth. Their use causes further damage by polluting. Nuclear energy is plentiful but brings with it extreme hazards. Consequently, there is great interest in harnessing forms of energy that are renewable and safe.

Currently, most power companies obtain only a small percentage of the electricity they provide from clean sources. For example, PSE&G's breakdown is as follows: coal 28%, gas 11%, nuclear 56%, oil 1%, renewable 4%. For a way to encourage your power company to provide more clean energy, go to the tristate area environmental page.
